If you find yourself with a moving truck that's too small, there are a couple of things that you can do to solve the problem quickly.
Rent a Second Truck
You may be able to rent a second truck from your moving company for less than you think. Or, you could look at renting a truck from another moving company to complement your larger truck. Renting a van or SUV may be an option as well. If you go this route, you might want to increase your number of movers in order to load both vehicles more efficiently.
Use Shipping Services
Another option is to take your extra boxes to a courier or shipping service that specializes in moving. They can deliver the package to your new doorstep, sometimes before you even make it there yourself. You would have the option of same-day air services or longer-term freight shipping, depending on how much money you want to spend. Try to avoid placing valuables in these shipping loads unless you purchase package insurance to go with it. The items you choose will also depend on the type of transportation; freight ship transportation is less particular about item weight than air transport, for instance.
Rent a Storage Unit
Storage units are another solution. If you rent a unit from a local self storage facility, you can come back to pick up the rest of your stuff at a later date, when it's most convenient for you. Try to place your lower priority items in the storage unit; you might find that you don't miss them at all, and then you won't even need to spend money transporting them to your new home.
You may also want to do a cost benefit analysis to see if it's even worth saving the items that don't fit in your moving truck. What is the cost of the added shipping or moving service compared to the depreciated value of the item? If you could get new items for less than twice the current value, then you might want to consider junking the items or donating them to a local charity.
Finding out that your items won't fit in the moving truck close to your departure can be a nasty surprise, but there are plenty of solutions to consider with short notice.
